PLAID CYMRU leader Ieuan Wyn Jones is poised to take over as First Minister of Wales, despite Rhodri Morgan's vow last night that he will fight on to keep the job.

Ieuan On Brink of Power

Mr Jones, pictured, is in pole position to lead a "rainbow coalition" of Plaid, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats following the Lib-Dems' decision to suspend talks with Labour.

Uncertainty over who will run the Assembly Government has lasted more than two weeks, since the election left Labour with just 26 of the 60 seats. Now Mr Jones is hot favourite to become First Minister, matching the achievement of the SNP's Alex Salmond in Scotland.

Yesterday Mr Jones told the Western Mail that if he did not try to form a government, it would be a "dereliction of duty".

He said, "Traditional politics means you either win or you lose. Here there is no clear winner.
