Summary
In the days when men were men a goal celebration consisted of a restrained handshake and a swift trot back to the centre circle for the re-start. If the occasion merited it a player might be permitted a pat on the back, but anything more tactile than this would have been considered positively indecent. This gradually evolved into spontaneous expressions of joy - players punching the air, hugging and kissing teammates and running to the home fans to share in a communal sense of ecstasy.
