SIR - Wyn Prichard's letter (February 29) clearly indicates why we have a shortage of craftspeople in Wales. When the Director of Wales Construction Skills states that the first remedy to the demands of the construction industry is to "work closely with colleges" I shudder with disbelief!

Craft apprenticeships cannot be completed in a college - apprentices have to work in industry for three years at least. The funding for the training of our youth should therefore go primarily to our master craftsmen within their industrial sites - not to lecturers in a college, though, of course, colleges must play a secondary, supporting role.
