WHO says no-one is interested in politics any more? Despite the Westminster expenses scandal and the recession, individuals, trade unions and businesses seem happier than ever to donate their cash to political parties.

Figures released by the Electoral Commission yesterday show more than pounds 26m pouring into party coffers in the second quarter of the year, the highest total recorded since the Commission was created some 10 years ago.
