Labour was last night licking its wounds after by-election battles, which saw one success for the Liberal Democrats, but a Tory failure to cash in on the Government's unpopularity over Iraq.

Prime Minister Tony Blair was at Chequers digesting the results of Thursday's contests in Leicester South - which saw a Liberal Democrat win - and Birmingham Hodge Hill, which saw Labour narrowly hold on to the seat.
