Stayaway shoppers who decided to wait for last minute bargains have been proved right as high street sales have begun in earnest. With only six shopping days left until December 25, shoppers around the UK are still expected to spend pounds 9.58bn on gifts. And with prices slashed in many stores, Welsh bargain hunters aren't being disappointed.

Traditionally, the week before Christmas is the busiest of the shopping year. One million shoppers are expected to walk through the doors of Cardiff's St David's shopping centre this week, and stores can often take an average week's takings in a single day.

But a poor year for retailers has led to many cutting prices in advance of Boxing Day, the day when sales traditionally start.

Shops including Argos, Curry's, Debenhams, Boots, Howells and BHS have all held sales but instead of blanket cuts across the shop most have opted for a single day or weekend sale or discounts on certain products.
