SIR - It is hugely disappointing that we are likely to suffer the indignity of a new Welsh Language Act in the near future when the present provision of Welsh language facilities required by the blunt instrument of the law in our public, commercial and educational establishments already imposes on us a quite intolerable burden.

What Plaid Cymru and nationalists often fail to understand is that for many citizens of Welsh birth and lineage such arcane phenomena as eisteddfodau, cymanfa ganus, the Welsh National Anthem and Cymraeg itself are as unfamiliar and alien in nature as the political manifesto or tribal rituals of some remote Pacific island of which they know very little and totally fail to identify.
