Wrexham MP Ian Lucas has flagged up what we've known for centuries - they've never let Wales nail our colours to the mast. The Union Flag represents only three of the UK's nations, he told the Commons last week. Let the debate begin and afford Wales its true place in the union, declared a shiny-eyed Lucas, brandishing his own dragon design on a sheet of A4.

But the debate has only served to unleash a load of imperialist bleating that is hilariously anachronistic. The online feedback section of the Daily Telegraph is probably not the place to look for reasoned discussion of this subject, yet some of the comments could have been written by Edward I's foot soldiers, such was the conviction that Wales is merely a region of England and thus its "true place in the union" is already reflected on the flag.
