Summary
SIR - As the first, most serious, troop casualties were being airlifted then taken down to the operating theatres on our aircraft carrier, HMS Eagle, at the start of the Suez campaign in 1956, the then Labour leader Hugh Gaitskell's radio broadcast condemning their action was being relayed through the ship's Tannoy.
I can still hear his words when Tony Blair and now Gordon Brown stands up in the Commons declaring how much they value our armed forces and shed patronising "crocodile tears" for the friends, colleagues and families of those killed in today's conflicts.See the full content of this document
