It was a case of third time lucky for Wrexham in the Potteries last night when a Chris Llewellyn penalty fired them into the second round of the Carling Cup and avoided a third defeat in three years by Vale. With the sides deadlocked at 1-1 after 120 minutes, the Welsh international kept his nerve after a miss by Vale's Danny Whitaker in the penalty shoot-out and a place in the second round was no more than Brian Carey's side deserved.

A dogged defensive display from the Dragons, who improved and grew in confidence as the night went on, took the tie into extra- time and substitutes Josh Johnson and Marc Williams both went close to snatching the decider before the spot-kick lottery.
