NO smoke alarm was fitted at two-fifths of properties where dwelling fires occurred during the past two years, new figures show.

Of the 2,187 fires that crews across Wales were called to in 2009, there was no alarm present at 926 of them. In 2010, there was no alarm at 820 of the 2,163 blazes.
