SIR - Jerry Springer - The Opera is to be performed at the Millennium Stadium. I consider this work to be blasphemous and it offends my moral sense. But it will also offend hundreds of thousands of citizens in Wales and this magnifies my single opinion into a major question.

I recognise that the issue of freedom of speech is involved, but at no stage in my long life have I considered this to be absolute. Freedom of speech must always be tempered by good judgment and, indeed, good manners. But in recent years severe legal restrictions have been placed on that claimed absolute right, especially in the areas of religion, race and colour. I recognise too that in the highly secularised and religionless Britain of today, opposition to these entertaining performances will only serve to advertise and increase box-office takings. But a comment is necessary.
