Son Mourns Dad at Football Club Gates

Summary

THIS was the poignant scene yesterday as a grieving son was consoled next to a tribute to his father outside the football club he loved.

Shirts and flags commemorating the life of football fan Mike Dye, 44, pictured right, were placed outside the Cardiff City Stadium after he died on his way to watch Wales play England at Wembley. Yesterday his son James was too distraught to talk as he sat beside the gates to the ground where his father seldom missed a game. Meanwhile, 150 miles down the M4, the Metropolitan Police launched amurder investigation into the incident which happened outside the Wembley turnstiles before Tuesday's European qualification match. About 7.20pm that evening Mr Dye - from the Canton area of Cardiff - was allegedly assaulted with a single punch before falling on the stadium concourse. He suffered head injuries and a heart attack. Despite the efforts of paramedics he never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead about an hour and a half later. A post- mortem examination was being conducted last night. Six people, ranging in age from the late 20s to the early 40s, who were arrested and questioned in connection with the incident, were last night released on bail to return to a London police station in November. The Metropolitan Police said all wereWales fans - four from North Wales and two who were born in South Wales and now living in England. A police spokesman said inter-club rivalry was not believed to have had anything to do with the attack. Neighbours in the cul- de-sac whereMrDye lived with his wife Nathalie yesterday characterised him as a man who would "do anything for anyone". Carole Murphy said: "I'm lost for words. He was one of the nicest people you could ever meet, he was a gentleman and family man. "He was always out with his dog Smartie and he was an avid Cardiff City fan and had a big flag out sometimes." Carole's husband Martin Murphy said: "You hear about it in Italy and Turkey over in Europe but you don't expect it here and at Wembley." Another neighbour Martine Lobina, 27, said the street was "devastated" by the news. She said: "He was such a nice guy. He was brilliant - he would do anything for anyone.
