A YOUNG mother who put her baby in hospital by feeding him laxatives avoided a jail sentence yesterday.

The 25 year old is believed to be suffering from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental disorder in which a person exaggerates or creates symptoms of a child's illnesses to gain attention.
