Jeff mumford, from the DVLA, explains the new law change for motorists and how it will mean safer roads for everyone: The Government's new vehicle tax rules have applied since January 2004. If your car tax is up for renewal you need to be aware of the changes:Why the new car tax rules are important:Currently there are about 1.75 million untaxed vehicles on the road. The new rules will reduce this number. Car tax can only be purchased with a valid insurance and MOT certificate. Reducing the number of untaxed cars means reducing the number of cars without insurance and MOT. The new rules will make the streets safer

Vehicle crime is estimated to cost the British economy pounds 3bn each year and accounts for more than a quarter of all reported crime tying up the police and the courts. The new rules will make it easier for police to trace a vehicle's keeper, thereby reducing crime. It is estimated that the overall cost of uninsured driving is pounds 500m, adding pounds 30 to each honest motorist's annual insurance premium.
