Tim bennett, nfu president, a beef farmer from Carmarthenshire, met Prime Minister Tony Blair last week to discuss farming issues, including avian influenza. The Prime Minister and Tim Bennett reviewed the measures that have been put in place to minimise the risk of avian influenza arriving in the UK and the steps that would need to be taken by government and poultry farmers if there was an outbreak in this country.
On leaving No 10, Tim Bennett said, 'The NFU, Defra/Welsh Assembly Government and the poultry industry have been working together for three-and-a-half years to ensure that all concerned within the industry adopt the best procedures to deal with the threat of avian influenza.
