No English Identity

Summary

SIR - Having just read H O'Brien's assertion, 25/6, that Westminster is the 'English Parliament', I know not whether to laugh or cry! True, since Scots and Welsh devolution, the bulk of business conducted there pertains to England, but I can think of no other national parliament in which the decisive influence of foreign MPs on domestic legislation is tolerated.

I cannot agree with the assertion that Scots and Welsh identity is under threat, on the contrary it is England which has become a non-nation, we are not even permitted legally to give our national identity on census returns. The UK Establishment, which has for at least three centuries been emphatically British, not English, is in a state of denial regarding England. Perhaps they feel their seats on the gravy train are at risk from the growing resurgence of Englishness.
