Socialist firebrand Aneurin Bevan helped steer the 1940s Labour Government away from House of Lords reform, declassified papers released today show. The notes of meetings held by ministers in the Attlee Government during 1948 are released by the National Archive today, and show a Cabinet split on the issue of reforming the upper house.
The Attlee administration failed to agree over the religious make- up of a new second chamber and thus missed the opportunity to reform it, the notes suggest.See the full content of this document
