SECRETARY of State for Wales Cheryl Gillan yesterday called for the private sector to take the lead in the economic recovery as she mounted a stubborn defence of the coalition's programme of cuts.

Delivering the Callaghan Lecture to an invited business audience at the St David's Hotel in Cardiff Bay, Ms Gillan said the only way to fix the economy was through private sector growth.
