THE first round of spending cuts to tackle Britain's record pounds 163bn annual deficit will be announced next week, Chancellor George Osborne said yesterday.

In a joint press conference with Liberal Democrat David Laws, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, he also confirmed a new independent body would produce official economic forecasts in future. Headed by economist Sir Alan Budd, the new Office for Budget Responsibility will stop ministers "fiddling" the forecasts, Mr Osborne suggested.

Mr Laws revealed his Labour predecessor, Liam Byrne, had left a valedictory message on his desk containing the words: "I'm afraid to tell you there's no money left".
