The leaders of the four main Welsh political parties have joined forces in a bid to defuse an embarrassing row over when the votes in May's Assembly elections should be counted. All parties want the votes to be counted overnight on May 3, but some returning officers and local authorities prefer the idea of counting during the day on May 4 - as happened in the first Assembly poll in 1999.
A meeting of senior AMs and council officials on Monday evening failed to resolved the dispute, with politicians asking returning officers to find a way to overcome their difficulties and count overnight.See the full content of this document
