IT'S a decade since Matthew Rhys arrived in Patagonia wearing his "embarrassing wardrobe of outdoor clothing" and carrying an oversized camera. While thousands of holidaymakers visit each year to sample its spectacular scenery and rich wildlife, the Hollywood actor was there for another reason - to find Welsh chapels and tearooms and to hear his mother tongue spoken in the Welsh colony's communities.

But he discovered much more than that. He picked up a copy of a diary by fellowWelshman John Murray Thomas who led an expedition through Patagonia during the late 19th century as Welsh settlers went in search of their nirvana. It proved an inspirational find.
