SIR - In your article on cancer rates in Gwynedd (The Western Mail, June 22), your reporter correctly points out that smoking rates in Gwynedd are above the Welsh average yet lung cancer rates are below. However this does not give the whole picture.
Absolute smoking percentages in the working age population in Gwynedd are about 33%, the Wales average being 31%. Only Rhondda Cynon Taf, Blaenau Gwent and Torfaen have higher overall percentages. The average annual rate of new cases of lung cancer in Gwynedd for 1999-2001 was indeed lower than the Wales average - the rate has been declining in Gwynedd and nationally during the 1990s.See the full content of this document
