Pedestrian Was Crushed by Runaway Van 'with a Faulty Handbrake'

Summary

A pedestrian was killed when a delivery van rolled down a hill because its handbrake was not put on properly, a court heard yesterday. Self-employed Glenn Haggerty, 36, who was not in the vehicle at the time, denies causing the death by dangerous driving of 85-year-old Wilfred Rogers. It was not even known that Mr Rogers had been involved in the crash - which also saw the van plough into a house - until six hours after it happened. His body was only found when the tenant of the damaged house was allowed back into the property.

Prosecutor Hywel Hughes told the jury at Newport Crown Court that after the crash a prohibition notice had been served on the van because of a faulty handbrake, preventing Haggerty of Heolgerrig, Merthyr Tydfil, or anyone else from using it.
