Thousands of people across Asia fled their homes in terror last night as they feared the buildings would collapse around them. Barely three months after the tsunami that shocked the world, an earthquake caused yet more panic. The quake turned out to be less severe, with far less devastating consequences. However, it was a vivid reminder of what is possible.

This time the warnings were heeded instantly and residents deserted their homes and poured out of high-rise buildings, desperate to seek out high ground inland.
