Music-sharing network Kazaa is set to become a legal service in a landmark decision for the record industry. Kazaa, which has been dubbed the biggest name in music piracy, has also agreed to pay pounds 53m in damages to the industry. Today's out-of-court settlement follows legal action by four record companies - Sony BMG, Universal, Warners and EMI - against the service's operators in the US and Australia.

Industry sales have plunged since the advent of file-sharing networks like Kazaa and figures released today estimate that there were 20bn illegal downloads around the world last year.
