Summary


A bold proposal that would see Plaid Cymru's leaders elected not by party members but by the much bigger pool of supporters could start a new trend in British politics. The possible introduction of American-style primary elections aims to involve tens of thousands of people who would never otherwise have a say in picking Plaid's candidate for First Minister.

Announced by Plaid's director of elections Adam Price at the party's spring conference in Carmarthen, the scheme would see up to 150,000 party supporters electing the National Assembly group leader and the party president. If that number participated, it would represent a 15-fold increase on the 10,000 members currently allowed to vote in such elections.
