Countryside bosses in the Lake District yesterday backed off a controversial plan to axe free guided walks because visitors were too 'white, middle aged and middle class'.

The Lake District National Park Authority was due to end around 400 free walks for up to 4,000 people provided each year for the area's 14 million visitors.
