THE Assembly Government has defended its levy on single use carrier bags after a report which retailers said showed the bags were not as environmentally damaging as often claimed.

The Environment Agency last week published a report which showed how many times different types of bags needed to be re-used in order to have a lower carbon footprint than lightweight single use bags.
