Leaving the European Union would be an 'act of extraordinary foolishness', the Prime Minister insisted ahead of the make-or- break summit on the Constitution. Tony Blair said he would not let Britain be sidelined in Europe 'for the sake of it' despite a ground swell of support for the UK Independence Party and its demands for withdrawal from the union.

But Mr Blair said, 'What we will not do is to marginalise Britain in Europe simply for the sake of it.'
