One was dubbed the 'traffic Taleban' while the other has six points on his licence. The first admits to driving like an 'undertaker' as part of his crusade against irresponsible motorists while his top police colleague wants to see the speed limit increased to 80mph. But both Richard Brunstrom and Meredydd Hughes are thought to be among the favourites to become the first all- Wales chief constable when the force is set up later this year.

South Yorkshire Chief Constable Mr Hughes has called for variable speed limits on Britain's motorways, arguing there is little point in having the same speed limit at rush hour as there is at 2am on Sundays.
