The school run on Monday could be a little bit tense when a new car seat law comes into force, says Anna Morrell PARENTS all over the country will be getting the tape measure out this weekend to see how their children measure up. Size has always been important to those still growing in the right direction but from next week how tall you are will be more of an issue that ever.

It will determine whether you can tumble arbitrarily into any old car just like a grown-up or whether you have to suffer the indignity, not to mention inconvenience, of having to sit on a child booster seat before you can belt-up on every single journey.

Prepare for Tantrums As You Strap in Your Child, but Remember It's All About Safety

The magic measurement is 135cm (4ft 5in). The new law states that all children under that height, or under the age of 12, whichever comes first, must use a booster seat when travelling in a car.

And to make sure parents - whom the law knows to be slapdash when faced with rebellious eight-year-olds - comply, there will be on- the-spot fines of pounds 30, or pounds 500 if the case goes to court, for those who don't.
