GORDON BROWNS new start will include a series of policy initiatives on housing, constitutional reform and the environment. Mr Brown, who becomes Prime Minister on Wednesday, yesterday began to appoint members of his Cabinet, giving new deputy leader Harriet Harman the job of party chair. Douglas Alexander, a key Brown ally and currently Transport and Scotland Secretary, will be in charge of planning the next election, and there will be a beefed-up role for the Department for International Development. And in a sign of the priority given to housing, Mr Brown said the Housing Minister, currently a junior role, will in future attend Cabinet. He may give that role to Jon Cruddas, who came top in the first round of voting for the deputy leadership. Mr Cruddas put the issue at the top of his pitch for the job. Another option would be to retain the current Minister, Yvette Cooper. Ms Cooper is married to Ed Balls, a member of Mr Browns inner circle and another tip for the Cabinet.
