THE number of towns in which key workers can afford to buy a home has increased sevenfold since house prices first started to fall.

Public sector workers such as nurses, teachers and firefighters, can now afford to buy a typical family property in 21% of UK towns, up from just 3% when prices reached their peak in 2007, research by Halifax has shown.
