Sir - The expensive trial of a cyclist accused of stealing a pounds 1 can of lager from the Co-op in Carmarthen (Western Mail, February 26) highlights a problem that has hit the courts again and again since self-service stores became popular.

I have long advocated that Parliament should step in and prohibit the Crown Prosecution Service from prosecuting alleged petty theft by customers from self-service shops unless given leave to do so by a senior judge by reason of the character of the accused or his involvement with accomplices. It is clear from your report that Judge John Diehl would not have given his leave in this case.
