Sir - The expensive trial of a cyclist accused of stealing a pounds 1 can of lager from the Co-op in Carmarthen (Western Mail, February 26) highlights a problem that has hit the courts again and again since self-service stores became popular.
I have long advocated that Parliament should step in and prohibit the Crown Prosecution Service from prosecuting alleged petty theft by customers from self-service shops unless given leave to do so by a senior judge by reason of the character of the accused or his involvement with accomplices.
