DURING the past couple of weeks, the newspaper and TV headlines have focused exclusively on the MPs' expenses scandal at Westminster.

As a result, it is easy to forget the economy remains in one hell of a mess and is unlikely to recover until well after the next general election. In particular, the spectre of mass unemployment looks set to loom large during the next 12 months as more and more companies cut their workforces.
