The Government is to fight the High Court ruling which granted asylum to nine Afghans who hijacked a plane and forced it to land in Britain, Home Secretary John Reid confirmed yesterday. In a statement mirroring Tony Blair's anger over the ruling, Mr Reid claimed the court's decision undermines faith in the system. 'When decisions are taken which appear inexplicable or bizarre to the general public, it only reinforces the perception that the system is not working to protect, or in favour of, the vast majority of ordinary citizens in this country.'

The Afghans want to stay in Britain, fearing their lives will be in danger in Afghanistan.
