SIR - There has recently been much criticism of 'list' AMs, and their alleged lack of connection with the people they represent.
There are two ways of remedying this while retaining a system of proportional representation. Either follow the recommendation of the Richard Commission and adopt the Single Transferable Vote, or change the list system from the current closed list (where the parties choose the order of preference of their candidates) to an open list (whereby the voter places the candidates of their chosen party in their own preferred order). As a means of ensuring that each AM has a genuine personal mandate, either system would be an improvement on the current one.
