A GOVERNMENT move to make the wearing of seat belts compulsory was given massive backing in the Commons last night. Offenders will face a maximum fine of pounds 30 if it becomes law. MPs gave the measure a 110 majority in a free vote after a grim warning from Transport Minister Dr John Gilbert that thousands of lives depended on their decision.
The measures, aimed at making the wearing of belts compulsory for drivers and front-seat passengers, are embodied in the Road Traffic (Seat Belts) Bill which had its second reading last night.
