THE Pope narrowly escaped being assassinated yesterday by a right- wing Turkish Armenian terrorist who had killed before - and had previously threatened to kill the Pope when he visited Istanbul in November 1979.

Pope John Paul received at least six wounds. He was shot twice in the stomach, one bullet passing through the body and leaving an exit wound, the other having to be removed by surgeons. He also had two slight wounds to the right arm and one on the left hand. He underwent emergency surgery lasting more than four hours to repair damaged intestines.
