Summary

S THE devastated son of a victim of a lethal poison gas tragedy yesterday condemned the sentence handed to the engineer who caused the death as "not long enough". Lethal mistakes made by Peter Tongue, 60, of Llanspyddid, near Brecon, left the central heating boiler pumping out deadly carbon monoxide fumes.

Pensioners Margaret Eileen Powell, 72, and Thomas Gwyn Morgan, 74, were found dead slumped on the sofa at Mrs Powell's Brecon home in December 2006. Mr Morgan, a friend from Port Talbot, had been visiting Mrs Powell at the time. Self-employed gas engineer Tongue had called to service her gas boiler 12 days before and had inadvertently left it in a lethal condition. A Cardiff Crown Court jury had heard previously that despite being a Corgi-accredited engineer, Tongue's registration for that type of boiler had lapsed three years before. He was jailed yesterday for three years after previously being found guilty of the manslaughter of both his victims earlier this month.
