As there are little or no trees on the Orkney archipelago, early settlers had to bring wood to the islands for any building whether furniture or homes.

These 70 islands are battered by the wind and the only flora to withstand this continual onslaught were the heaths and sea grasses, both of which have been adapted by islanders for their homes.
