A lot of smallholders would give their right arm for a rotavator. When we first got ours, we were thrilled. Bought for just pounds 50 from an ad on a website for smallholders, it had a sturdy Briggs and Stratton engine and had been well-maintained. The owner was only giving it up because he had bought a bigger, more powerful machine.

It was fantastic. Using it was just like having a hired help to do the digging for you, and we wondered how we'd ever managed without it. Effortlessly rooting its way through the earth in minutes rather than the hours it had always taken us in the past, it really earned its keep, and quickly became our favourite new toy.
