Former Welsh scrum-half Rob Howley last night bemoaned Wales' sluggish start against Japan, but praised Gareth Jenkins' men for a much improved second-half performance. A slew of handling errors and turnovers marred the first half from a Welsh perspective, but a greater sense of direction in the second period was an encouraging sign for next week's crucial tie against the Fijians.

"I think the first half showed a lack of confidence," said Howley. "I think second half we were much more confident on the ball, we were more clinical, and that showed in the expression of the players.
