Online retailers could boost their sales by pounds 5.57bn a year by providing people with a more secure way to pay for purchases, research claimed yesterday. Around 15.6 million credit cardholders currently buy things over the internet, collectively spending pounds 16.4bn a year, according to MasterCard.

Those who shop online spend an average of pounds 1,051 each annually, with airline tickets and holidays the most popular purchases.
