IAN McGEECHAN is distraught at the loss of crocked Tom Shanklin from his Lions planning, the Western Mail has learned.

Tour manager Gerald Davies last night revealed the Lions were already working on contingency plans to replace centre Shanklin and Ireland scrum-half Tomas O'Leary.

The in-form pair would have been front-runners to make the starting lineup for the three Tests with South Africa during the 10- match tour, which kicks off against a Royal XV in Rustenburg on May 30.

But the fractured ankle suffered by O'Leary during Munster's Magners League victory over the Scarlets and the dislocated right shoulder suffered by Shanklin when the Blues beat the Dragons three days ago have put a spanner in Lions' preparations.
