Shun Cruel Charities ; Comment & Debate

Summary

SIR - Why would a specialist doctor in emergency medicine "unambiguously welcome a new initiative by the campaign group Animal Aid to criticise leading medical charities"? The answer, in the words of Pembrokeshire's Dr Adrian Stallwood, is that such charities are "subjecting animals to pointless suffering, squandering valuable resources, and engaging in a worrying secrecy about the animal research they conduct or fund".

Medical charities play an important role when it comes to human health, yet many - including Cancer Research UK, the British Heart Foundation and the Alzheimer's Society - conduct or fund invasive research on animals. To highlight this, Animal Aid will be holding a Day of Action for Humane Medical Research today, urging people to donate only to charities that are not involved in vivisection.
