BETWEEN Columbia's first mission on April 12, 1981, to the return of Atlantis to Florida's Kennedy Space Centre tomorrow, there have been 133 space shuttle flights costing $196bn and 14 lives.

The missions have helped service and build the International Space Station, the satellite base from where the technology for a mission to Mars might one day be developed.
