THE new deputy governor of the Bank of England has prompted fresh fears of "stagflation" by saying the current economic downturn is as bad as in the 1970s.

Charles Bean said the downturn could "drag on for some considerable time", and that every time the financial markets began to look better "another grenade" exploded.
