Tony blair was heading for an historic third term in Downing Street last night on a majority heavily cut by stay-at-home protests and a stable Tory vote.A joint BBC/ITV exit poll last night suggested Labour's majority would be down from 161 to 66 - leaving the party with 356 seats in parliament.

The Conservatives were predicted to be up 45 seats to 209 seats - which could be enough to keep Tory leader Michael Howard in his job.
